Philosophical Quote of the Week 每周哲学引言

All that remains is a fate whose outcome alone is fatal. Outside of that single fatality of death, everything, joy or happiness, is liberty. A world remains of which man is the sole master. What bound him was the illusion of another world.

— Albert Camus

Artist of the Week 每周艺术家

Agnes Meyer-Brandis

Agnes Meyer-Brandis is an internationally acclaimed German installation artist. Her work lies at the intersection of ”science, fiction, and fabulation,” drawing from her interdisciplinary backgrounds in science and art, as she describes on her website. She is the founder of the Research Raft for Art and Subjective Science, a fictional scientific organization that seeks to explore experimental forms of art, science, and research. The Research Raft hosts fascinating fictitious departments such as the Department for “Snapping Shrimp Research, Cavitation and Sonoluminescence” and the Department for “Signs & Signatures of Unorganized Genetic Units”. In the arguably tangible realm of real life, the Research Raft has ties with Meyer-Brandis’s many sprawling projects, such as Making Clouds, a performance lecture-cum experiment exploring weightlessness and flying objects through artistic and scientific lenses.

Perhaps her most famous and most representative work is Moon Goose Colony (pictured), a performance documented through film. Meyer-Brandis takes inspiration from Francis Godwin’s 1638 “The Man in the Moone,” arguably the first work of Western science fiction, which features a man flying to the moon hoisted by ”moon geese.” Meyer-Brandis actualizes Godwin’s idea by raising a colony of ”moon geese”: birds named after astronauts that she imprinted herself upon as their mother and trained under moon-like habitats. The meticulous execution of the performance and the intimately bizarre images of a space-suit-clad Meyer Brandis mothering the moon geese made the piece a fascinating combination of science and fantasy.

Exhibition of the Week 每周展览

Proregress: The Shanghai Biennials
禹步:第十二届上海双年展

First started in 1996, the Shanghai Biennials are the oldest Biennials of contemporary art in China. Functioning as a place of dialogue and display for artists from around the globe, it includes a main exhibition in the PSA, as well as multiple other portions that span the city.

As the late Zygmunt Bauman argued, today's culture appears as a "negation of negation of utopia", or what he called "Retropia." Our historical horizon is defined by nostalgia and a constant assessment of our relationship with the past. However, the question of our relationship with progress and regression is not solely related to the way we negotiate our hopes or fears in the line that goes from the future to the past. It also involves the intensification of the experience of historical change in our societies, which is related in turn to the mixture of advancement and regression of all kinds of social agendas.

Among the many language discoveries that emerged from E. E. Cummings' experiment in poetry, is a word made of the condensation of progress and regress: Proregress. Introduced in the XIXth section of W ViVa (1931), this term may illuminate much about the contemporary conditions of history and time.
